Most new guitars need a proper setup to play well. Anytime that you change string guages, tunings, or hardware, a setup is probably needed then too. Just the years passing or changes in humidity can cause you favorite guitar to go out of whack.
What is a setup? Adjustments to string height at the nut, saddle(s), intonation, neck relief, pickup height, new strings installed, to name a few things. I will set the action (string height) to your specs, though for most people, a low to medium action works very well.
Setups from $35.00. Floyd Rose $50.00.
Restring and tune only $10.00, Floyd Rose $15.00.
Truss Rod adjust only $10.00.
INTONATION
Adjustment of saddles (and nut, if needed), so that notes play correctly all over the fretboard. One must understand, however, that no guitar or other equal tempered instrument will play every note perfectly everywhere. It's all a compromise by design.
Electric stop-tail or floating (strat-style) $20.00
Floyd Rose Style $30.00.
PICKUPS / WIRING MODS
Unlike the old days, when you were stuck with what the factory put in, today you have almost an infinite amount of choices for pickups. Single coils, humbuckers, stacked, rails, acoustic, you name it. You can also have the wiring and switches modified for a staggering variety of sounds. This is one of our specialties. We'll install any pickups you like and perform any wiring mods you choose, such as series-parallel, tele 4-way, coil-split, in-phase / out-of-phase, "blender",whatever your imagination allows. Your pickup choice may allow for different mods.
Electric Guitars
Single pickup replacement $30.00
Two pickup replacement $45.00
Three pickup replacement $55.00
Custom rewiring performed at $45.00 / hour, averages $30.00-$45.00.
Guitar shielding from $50.00.
We can also install or replace pickups in acoustic guitars.
NUTS/ SADDLES
We can replace or adjust your guitar's nut (bone or plastic piece near the tuning pegs), or saddle (that thing on the other end), with a bone, graphite, brass, tusq, or plastic nut or saddle. Why do this?
1. Well, over the years the nut slots may get too deep, causing fret buzz on the first few frets. If the slots are too high from the factory, your fingers will hurt and barre chords will be almost impossible.
2. Changing string guages may cause binding in the slots, or you may be hearing a cracking or popping noise as you tune the strings. We use proper nut files to adjust the slots to remedy this.
3. If the saddle is too high, again your fingers will hurt. If too low, you're in buzz city. The only cures for too low are replacement or shims.
4. Tone, tone, tone. Nut and saddle changes can make a dramatic difference in tone. Most people prefer the tone of bone. It could make a huge difference in "waking up" your entry-level instrument.
If you have an electric guitar, the difference in nut material is slightly less noticeable. However, you have the option to change out your cheap, pot-metal saddles to stainless steel, brass, or other materials. Some people hear a big difference this way.
Bone Nuts starting at $40.00.
Bone Saddles starting at $30.00.
Other materials vary in price.
TUNERS
Guitar doesn't hold tune well? It may be the tuners, especially if it has already been properly setup. We can replace your tuners with various types (standard, locking, gearless, vintage) and brands of replacements.
Starting at $30.00.
FRET WORK
Frets can misbehave over time. They make get worn down, pop out of their slots, slice your fingers, all sorts of madness. We can file the ends, "level and crown" your frets, replace the whole set, or just replace or repair the offending ones.
Fret level and dress (crown) starting at $90.00
Complete refret starting at $200.00. Finished maple neck or binding extra.
Partial refret $15.00 / fret, $45.00 minimum.
REFINISHING
